Recognizing advancements in laser technology, mechatronics and robotics, for example, companies who have been here for decades, supplying parts and products to the mining and natural gas industries, are successfully developing new world-wide markets for their products and pivoting production strategies. New companies coming to the region are bringing new manufacturing technologies and solutions.
Companies like Lawrence Brothers, Inc., West River Conveyors, Simmons Equipment and Paul’s Fan Co. started their businesses years ago producing products like battery trays, fans, and equipment used by the coal industry. Working with VCEDA, these employers have diversified their product offerings and expanded their market shares to other industries.
Tempur Sealy located its first U.S. manufacturing facility in the region more than 20 years ago and has expanded its modern facility several times. Today, every Tempur-Pedic pillow is made right here in Southwest Virginia’s e-Region.
New manufacturers locating in the region, including Tate, a global manufacturer of customized modular containment solutions for data centers, are seeing success in their decisions to locate here and finding a talent pool trained in advanced manufacturing skills.
Workforce & Industry Collaboration
Virginia is ranked #1 in talent attraction programs, and Southwest Virginia’s e-Region builds on that strength by partnering with two community colleges and local school systems to deliver specialized training programs for manufacturing careers.
At the heart of this effort is the Southwest Virginia Alliance for Manufacturing (SVAM), a coalition of manufacturers, educational institutions, workforce development boards, chambers of commerce, and state organizations working together to elevate the role of manufacturing in the region.
Guided by its vision to unite Southwest Virginia manufacturers, SVAM is helping strengthen the region’s position as a world leader in advanced manufacturing opportunities.
